The Travel program is designed to give boys with more advanced basketball skills the opportunity to play against other communities in a more competitive environment. Tryouts are open to boys who live in Edina and/or attend school in Edina. Participating in travel basketball requires a significant time commitment from the player and their family and should be the player’s primary athletic extra-curricular activity during the travel season.
EBA will be hosting a parent meeting to discuss the boys and girls traveling program in further detail and answer any questions from parents.

Location: South View Middle School Auditorium
Registration opens August 1st and runs through Thursday, September 26th. The registration system will close at 11:59pm on the 26th. Glitches can happen when the system is overloaded. Do not wait until the last minute to register. Late registrations will not be taken.
Boys travel teams compete in 11 tournaments (4th graders compete in 10) that have been selected in advance by the EBA. Tournaments are held on weekends and games may be played on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Tournaments begin in early November and conclude in mid March.
New for this year is the option for each travel team to have an additional tournament paid for and scheduled by the EBA. We recognize that in past years many teams have paid for and scheduled extra tournaments on their own. This season we will test out doing this for the teams that want to play in an extra tournament. Please note the decision whether to sign up for the additional tournament should be made by the coach and parents after tryouts and the teams are formed.
Parent coaches are used in 4th grade. Coaches in 4th grade will not be determined until the completion of tryouts and formation of the 4th grade teams. Paid coaches are used in 5th-8th grade. In rare cases, parent coaches may be used. All coaches go through mandatory background check, concussion training, and coaching clinics throughout the season.
WHEN AND WHERE DO KIDS PRACTICE?
There are typically two practices per week. Practices can take place on any weekday evening. Practices are 1.5 hours long (usually 6-7:30pm or 7:30-9pm though some practices until 9:45pm may be needed due to revised school start/end times). Practices can take place at either of the Middle schools, High School (both the main gym and activity center) or Community Center. Teams may also have some practices at Good Samaritan Church and will have team training sessions at 43 Hoops (Hopkins). Practices for travel teams begin the week of October 21st.
Provided the player is working hard and listening during practice and not repeatedly absent from practices or games, the EBA guideline is equitable playing time. Each player should receive a minimum of 40% of the total team playing time over the course of a tournament. Although this allows for coach's discretion, our coaches are reminded that traveling basketball's purpose is to provide skill development, game experience, and a positive experience to each member of a team during each game.
If you are going to miss practice (due to illness, injury, or religious, school, family event), please communicate with your coach ahead of time. Missing practice and/or games adversely impacts the rest of the team’s practice and game preparation. Repeated misses of practice or unexpected absences from practices may result in reduced playing time in subsequent games.
UNIFORMS / BASKETBALLS AND APPAREL
4th graders will need a 27.5 inch ball, 5th-6th grade boys travel play with a 28.5 inch ball and 7th-8th grade use a 29.5 ball. If placed on a team, Players may use the ball they brought to tryouts, or they will have the opportunity to purchase a new one at the time that all travel players purchase new shooter shirts. THIS YEAR ALL PLAYERS NEED TO ORDER AND PURCHASE A SHOOTER SHIRT. If you have the 2018 uniform already and are NOT new to travel, you just need to purchase a new Shooter Shirt. If you need to replace your uniform pieces, because of size or you lost a piece, you will need to order your pieces and you are also required to purchase a shooter shirt. The EBA is partnering with Nicklasson Athletic Company again this seaon for our apparel. Representatives will be on hand during the first tryout weekend for players to try on, select, and pay for uniforms, uniform pieces and shooter shirts. We will also have other EBA apparel on site to try on and purchase. Stay tuned for more information coming prior to tryouts.

$680 total ($205 registration fee, $25 tryout fee (non-refundable), $450 travel fee) for 5th-8th graders
$525 total ($205 registration fee, $25 tryout fee (non-refundable), $295 travel fee) for 4th graders
Parents and players should be aware that there are additional costs for participating in the travel program that are their responsibility. Additional costs include uniforms, admission fees for the tournaments (usually $6-8/adult, $4-5/child per day), expenses of traveling to and from tournaments, and overnight lodging and food costs at the St. Cloud tournament in late February for 5th-8th grade teams).
The EBA's policy states that once teams are formed no refunds will be given except with a doctor's written excuse or a move out of the district. If your child tries out and is not placed on a travel team, we (the EBA) will automatically enroll him in our house program. There is no need to re-register. Also, the paid travel fee and uniform fee will be refunded back to you.
The EBA will coordinate a photo day during the season.
To ensure a fair, unbiased, and independent review of each player, EBA uses four independent evaluators during the first weekend of travel tryouts. Our evaluators have almost 90 combined years of experience evaluating, coaching, and instructing players at all levels from grade school through high school. All four have coached or currently coach AAU youth teams along with extensive experience coaching grades 4 through 8. Two of our evaluators have been high school head coaches at the freshman, sophomore, and JV levels with one of them also having been a head varsity coach in the metro area. Combined with our varsity boys coach and staff conducting drills around dribbling, passing, shooting, and game situations, our evaluators have an opportunity to complete as accurate an assessment of our players as possible over the course of the tryouts.
It is important that parents and players understand that evaluators are looking for the players who will make up the best basketball teams and not just the tallest or fastest players, or those who make the best shots. A successful and winning basketball team includes players who can rebound, play defense, pass the ball, shoot the ball and are willing to play within a team framework with a positive attitude.
If your player is unable to participate in tryouts, the parent of the player must contact the EBA (see "Contact us" at the bottom of this webpage) prior to the tryout session. Under certain circumstances approved by the EBA President, the VP of Boys Travel and the VP of Girls Travel (for example - religious, family event, or injury/illness when accompanied by a doctor or school nurse note), an excused player may be eligible and placed on a traveling basketball team even though they were unable to participate in the evaluations. Please note that the doctor or school nurse note must include an estimate of how long the player may be out.

BOYS TRYOUT SCHEDULE
When attending Boys travel tryouts, please refrain from wearing prior year uniforms or shirts with last names. Pinnies will be provided with numbers and the evaluators will refer to pinnie numbers while conducting evaluations.
Tryouts will take place on Saturday, September 28th and Sunday, September 29th at South View gyms and Sunday, October 6th, also at South Views gyms. 24 hours later, in the evening of September 30th, 4th grade final teams will be posted on EBA’s website. That evening we will also post the list of 5th – 8th grade boys moving on to the final team placement tryouts for the following Sunday, Oct 6th. Only the boys on that list should attend Sunday's (Oct. 6th) tryout for final team placement.
Final team placement for 5th-8th grade boys will be posted 24 hours later on Oct 7th.

A. Throughout Evaluations
While the evaluator and paid coaches’ decisions impacting player’s making a travel team and placement on a specific travel team are final, if you have a question about the evaluation or team placement, those questions can be directed to the EBA and/or appropriate boys or girls traveling director.
B. During the Season
Issues or conflicts, after team selection, including, but not limited to playing time, conflicts among players, coaches, and/or parents, and any other team or individual related matters shall be resolved through the following procedure:
1. Players and parents should first discuss the matter with the team’s head coach.
2. If the issue cannot be resolved to the satisfaction of all parties, the matter should be presented to the appropriate traveling director for boys or girls travel.
3. If the issue still cannot be satisfactorily resolved, the matter should be presented to the EBA Executive Committee for consideration and final resolution.
