The Developmental League is focused on providing fun skill development opportunities for boys and girls in grades 3-4, that live in or attend school in Edina.  This program is meant to progress a player’s interest and skill level in the game of basketball from the foundation that was created in Pee Wee. The objectives of the program are to ensure that the participants have fun, learn the importance of sportsmanship and teamwork, develop their individual skills and experience the positives of winning – in that order. Each player will play at least half of each game. We want each child to have a positive experience from participating in this program.

The coaches are adult volunteers, so please consider volunteering your talents and time.  Training for coaches is provided, along with a professionally prepared practice plan.

All programs will focus on fundamental basketball skills:

  • Dribbling, Passing and Shooting skills;

  • Player movement – with and without the basketball (picks and screens, cutting)

  • Man to Man Offense and Defense

  • Introducing team concepts

Boys Details

The season will begin with the SKILLS, DRILLS and PLAY program. This will be put on by coaches of Edina High School teams. There will be a series of one hour sessions where athletes will be given an opportunity to develop and improve on all the fundamentals of the game while working with an instructor and then put those skills to use during supervised play.

Efforts will be made to balance the teams according to the skill levels of the players. In grades 3 and 4, teams are typically selected based on schools with careful attention to balance. “Play with Requests” will be honored in grades 3 & 4 for no more than one player as long as both players make the request. Team balance and equity may supersede "play with requests". Parents coaching will always have their children playing together with them. The season starts late November and ends in early March. Throughout the year, each player will have approximately 20 events (games, practices, clinics).
