The purpose of the EBA’s House League program is to provide an opportunity to play organized for all interested Edina boy’s grade's 5-12 and girls in grades 5-8, regardless of their experience or playing ability.

This league is for players who have decided not to play in the traveling program or the school teams or did not make one of those teams during tryouts. We want to foster a lifelong love for the game of basketball so the objectives of the program are to ensure that the participants have fun, learn the importance of sportsmanship and teamwork, develop their individual skills and experience the positives of winning – in that order. Each player will play at least half of each game. We want each child to have a positive experience from participating in this program.

The coaches are adult volunteers interested in working with youth and interested in basketball. It is estimated that we will need nearly 150 coaches to direct the skills development and fun of the kids. Please consider volunteering your time to coach, co-coach or assist as a parent manager this year. Check the appropriate box in the registration process and someone will contact you.

The number of coaches that sign up is directly related to the number of players that will assigned to each team. Ideally, we would like to have no more than 9 players on each House League team. This enables the players to have more game time and more individual practice time.

The season starts late November and ends with a tournament in early March. Throughout the year, each player will have approximately 22 events (games, practices, clinics).

Note: The following are planned dates for each league and are subject to change until final schedules are posted.

Boys Details

Grades 5-8

Boys in grades 5-8 will have a mix of games and practices starting in Mid November and going through the end of February.  Starting in 5th grade, team balance is the foremost concern. Therefore, the EBA instituted an Equidraft system that allows board members and coaches to participate in building balanced teams. Parents coaching will always have their children playing together with them. The season starts late November and ends with a tournament in early March. Throughout the year, each player will have approximately 20 events (games, practices, clinics).

Grade 9

The EBA offers a 9th grade House League for those players not participating on a school organized team. The 9th grade program is intended to be purely a recreational league for fun, with no expectation of continued skill development. The 9th grade league runs from December through mid March, with games played after school at either Valley View or South View . Registration for 9th grade house league will begin in August and run through team selection for school teams. There will be no late fees after October 31, 2007 for 9th league players!

High School League

The Edina Basketball Association expanded their house league to include 10th, 11th and 12th grades last year. It was a success as nearly 70 boys played during the inaugural season. The season begins in December and runs through the beginning of March. There are up to two games per week and they are played on early Wednesday and/or Friday evenings as well as Sunday afternoons.

The purpose of this league is to create opportunities for kids that have participated in the EBA throughout their youth to continue to play basketball in a structured environment. To that end, we have a league coordinator that will be present at all games to help oversee the games and handle any issues. These games will be professionally refereed. However, we will only be scheduling games but can make court time available for practicing.

Girls Details

The Edina Girls House League season runs from Mid-November until end of February.  New this year we will be working in conjunction with the Minnetonka and Wayzata House League programs for games. Including Edina teams, we expect between 10 and 12 teams per grade in this new inter community House League.

Each team will have two practices in November with their first game the first Saturday in December.  Each team will have one practice a week during the season in addition to the Saturday games. Figure roughly 25+ hours of activity. Teams will be organized as 5/6th teams and 7/8th teams.

Highlights of the Program

  • All games are on Saturday mornings. Last year there were 9 regular season games and then a two day tournament at the end of February that provided another 3+ games. At least 12 games all in and tournament winners received medals.

  • All weekly practices will be held in Edina facilities.

  • Our teams would have volunteer parent coaches.

  • Most games will be in Minnetonka, but we do anticipate some of the scheduled games to be held in Edina.
